Looking for something off the beaten path in California? Northern California has many charming smaller cities and towns that appeal to those looking to jump out of the fast lane for a bit. If a bit of R&R is long overdue, check out our top selections below.

Eureka

Located in Humboldt County, Eureka (pop.~27,000 in 2010) lies approximately 270 miles north of San Francisco. Hundreds of ornate Victorian homes line the streets and  a large portion of the 19th century commercial zone has been preserved. This has contributed to the entire city having been named a state historic landmark. Stroll the shops and galleries, have some lunch, then enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride. Make sure to see the Carson Mansion, widely considered "the most grand Victorian home in America."

Mendocino

This unincorporated community (pop.~890 in 2010) is located in Mendocino County, about 150 miles south of Eureka. And although the town may be small, its charm is mighty; with whitewashed wooden buildings and stunning overlooks. The community is home to a large number of artists, who seek to capture the beauty that surrounds them in every direction. Take a stroll and buy some local artwork, then have a delicious meal... just about anywhere you pick is sure to be tasty, as the town prides itself on its fresh seafood, and locally-sourced ingredients. Then spend the night in a lovingly restored Victorian Bed and Breakfast.

Fort Bragg

Just 10 short miles up the coast from Mendocino, this town (pop.~7,200 as of 2010) offers up stunning views of the Pacific. It's also a great place to watch the migrating grey whales and baby seals and sea lions. Stop by the botanical garden, which has one of the nation's largest collections of rhododendrons. You'll also want to visit the fascinating Glass Beach. In the early part of the 20th century residents discarded items, including glass, onto the beach. Over the years, the pounding waves eventually wore the multicolored bits of glass down into smooth, sparkling beads which now cover the beach. It is a wonderful place to just 'get away from it all.'

Gualala

60 miles south of Fort Bragg you'll find Gualala (pop.~2,000 in 2010). This is where people come to get away from the congestion and noise of the city. Peaceful activities like fishing, hiking, and watching the sunset reign supreme here. In the village, there are a few specialty shops and studios that feature local arts and crafts. Stay a few nights and enjoy the picture-perfect scenery all around and return home (wherever that may be) renewed and refreshed.

Truckee

Located about 17 miles northwest of North Lake Tahoe, this town (pop.~16,000 in 2010) has recently been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The city is rich in history- it got its name from a Paiute chief, it was part of the ill-fated Donner Party's journey, and was a hub of the lumber industry. Today, people love to hit the slopes here, hike the trails, play some golf, fish, and shop at a unique selection of stores. Make sure to visit the Donner Memorial State Park and Emigrant Trail Museum and learn more about the grit and determination of California's early pioneers.

Northern California is a vast world of everything from jagged cliffs  to smooth glass-covered beaches, and from Victorian hideaways to pioneer pathways. Embrace the slower pace of life that defines Northern California and make memories as grand as the towering Redwoods.
