California For Families

Destinations for Family Trips within California

Whether you live there or are heading in from out of state, California is a land of pure kid nirvana. And although day trips and vacations can be a bit more challenging with the wee ones, we know the trip will have been worth it once you arrive at any of these top attractions in California for families.

Disneyland

So much fun not just for the kiddos, but for the adults, too. This iconic theme park features life-size characters mingling with the guests, amazing rides, (from gentle to thrilling),  fun exhibits, great shopping, and delicious eats. No trip to California would be complete without a stop at the aptly-named 'Happiest Place on Earth'.

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Located on the famous Cannery Row, this aquarium is consistently ranked on many a 'best aquariums in the world' list. There are a host of hands-on exhibits, many featuring some of the more than 600 species on display. Don't miss the adorable sea otters, especially at feeding time.

San Diego Zoo

This impressive zoo is home to nearly 4,000 animals from all across the globe.  Make sure to visit the Giant Panda Research Station; both you and the kids will love their antics. Many of the animals at the Children's Zoo are trained as animal ambassadors and can be touched and observed.

Legoland

Here kids can meet their favorite Lego characters and visit a Lego-themed fantasy land. The Imagination Zone allows children to design and build their own exciting creations. With plenty of rides, shows, and hands-on attractions the little ones are sure to be entertained for hours; and, best of all, you won't step on a Lego!

Universal Studios

This popular theme park is jam-packed full of rides and attractions, all of which are based on movie/TV themes.  Running the gamut from dinosaurs to Minions, there is something for everyone here. While there, visit CityWalk, a one-stop destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment.

California State Railroad Museum

Widely regarded as North America's best railroad museum, the history of the 'iron horse' is brought to life through restored locomotives, railroad cars, and artifacts. You can board a few of the cars, one which simulates riding on a track. The second floor is dedicated to model trains and there are several train tables for kids to play with.

Safari West

This private wildlife preserve and tent camp provides a three-hour riding and walking adventure through 400 acres of amazing mostly native African species including giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, and a 'herd' of others. The whole family will love the tents, where you can stay in plain sight of the animals;  they have hardwood floors, soft beds, and a private bathroom with hot water.

Muir Woods National Monument

This spectacular stand of old growth Coast Redwood is an ideal place to hike and many trails are paved or boardwalked, perfect for strollers and little ones. The forest is home to a wide array of plants and animals, but the stars are the giant redwoods, some of which you can walk right into, or simply hug!

Knott's Berry Farm

This former site of the famous Knott's Berry Farm is now home to a theme park featuring rides for kids of all ages, live entertainment, games, and arcades. The themed areas include Fiesta Village, Camp Snoopy, Ghost Town, and The Boardwalk.  Pick a place to lunch and then do a little shopping for some great souvenirs.

California Science Center

Stimulating creativity and inspiring learning is their mission and they sure hit the mark.  Children will love the interactive exhibits, where they can form their own hypothesis.  Best of all, the Space Shuttle Endeavour now makes its home here. Adults will love the free admission, too.

We think  you'll love all of these wonderful attractions in California for families;  just make sure to play, learn, touch, and have all the fun you can possibly have....are we there, yet?
