The state park's name comes from Chimney Rock, a towering granite outcropping standing 315 feet high. This is a popular viewpoint for those visiting the park, and can require a bit of a strenuous climb to reach the top—however, the view is worth it!

For those not able to trek to the top of this structure, there is an elevator that allows for maximum accessibility.

Go Hiking

The park's numerous hiking trails are one of its major attractions. Chimney Rock State Park has ten different hiking trails covering different areas of the park. Some of the most popular trails include the following:

• Skyline Trail: This popular 2.8-mile trail will provide breathtaking views as it climbs the ridges and hillsides and stops at the Chimney Rock viewpoint. This trail features many sets of stairs, making it a moderate to strenuous hike.
• Hickory Nut Trail: Waterfall lovers will appreciate this 1.5-mile trail due to the ability to see the famous Hickory Nut Falls. This is an easy hike, and hikers will have the option to view the top of the falls or the bottom, depending on how much time they have.
• Party Rock Trail: This interval hike is the right choice for those looking for a challenge! As you climb to the top, you will likely encounter lots of beautiful wildlife and wildflowers. This is a difficult trail, so only attempt it if you are in good shape and the weather is right.

In addition to its many popular hikes, this state park also has several kid-friendly and wheelchair-accessible paths and walkways, making it truly a park for everyone.

While the six major trails all fall within the paid-entry zone of the park, four trails can be accessed for free. Please consult a map of the park to determine if you will need to pay a fee upon entry.

Go Birdwatching

Many people choose to visit Chimney Rock State Park for its wonderful access to birdwatching. Regardless of what trail you are on, you can expect to see many of the great avian residents of North Carolina.

Before embarking on your trip, it may be worth investing in a birdwatching book so you can best identify the birds you see. Additionally, if you are hoping to see a specific species of bird, check its migration patterns to make sure it will be in the area when you are.

Try Rock Climbing

For those who are looking for a daring time, there are opportunities to try rock climbing on the granite outcroppings that make the park famous. It is worth joining a guided rock climbing tour if it is your first time on the ropes. 

If you are a veteran climber, you can also climb on your own in the Rumbling Bald Climbing Access area, where you will have access both to technical climbs and bouldering.

See Some Animals

Perhaps the most family-friendly option is to check out the Animal Discovery Den. In this quaint lodge, a park ambassador can introduce you and your family to a number of different creatures that call the park home. When Should You Visit Chimney Rock State Park?

The time of year you choose to visit will depend on your park interests. Those hoping to do some hiking may enjoy late summer and fall visits when the temperature is not so extreme and the leaves are changing. Bird watchers may wish to visit when their favorite species will be passing through the area.

Regardless of your activity of choice, you should always check the weather before visiting. The following conditions can cause hiking or climbing to become dangerous:

• Snow

Most people tend to visit during the warmer seasons, but there are several winter offerings if you appreciate the cold weather too.
