Animal lovers will want to include the San Diego Zoo in any vacation plans. With almost 4000 animals on 100 acres, this is quite an experience. It is one of only a handful of zoos that has the giant panda, a fact that alone makes the zoo a must-see attraction.

While you may come to the zoo to see the animals, you will also find many other activities to enjoy. The Skyfari aerial tram gives you a unique view of the zoo from high above. Another option to see the entire zoo at a glance is to reserve a spot for Breakfast with Pandas, a two-hour event that includes a tour of the zoo and a visit with the giant pandas while they eat breakfast. This activity happens before the zoo opens and is in addition to the cost of admission.

You will want to plan at least one entire day at the San Diego Zoo. Take breaks and find interesting souvenirs at the shops and enjoy delicious foods at the vendors located throughout the zoo. Some of the popular eateries include Front Street Café, Safari Kitchen, and Jungle Java.

Four play areas within the zoo allow the kids to play and explore while you relax. Each one is unique to the area where it is located. For instance, Koala Klimber is located in the Australian Outback where kids can get their photos taken hanging out in the trees.

Of course, the highlight of any visit to the zoo is the list of animals you can see. Visit the Discovery Outpost to meet the Chinese alligator or see the anaconda. The Elephant Odyssey is home to the elephant, but you will also see the California Condor and the jaguar and lion here as well. Go to the Northern Frontier to see the arctic fox and polar bear.

Special activities allow people to get up close and personal with many of the animals who reside at the zoo. Kids can ask questions of the trainers and learn about habitats and habits of various creatures. Younger kids will enjoy Kinder Nights with an adult along where they will learn more in-depth about specific animals each month. This experience goes beyond what animals do to why they do it. For example, you might learn what sound a giraffe makes or why animals jump.

No matter how many zoos you have visited, the San Diego Zoo is a one-of-a-kind experience. Make plans to visit for at least one day or schedule more time to see everything this attraction has to offer.
