About 5 miles northwest of Yountville you'll find Rutherford (pop. 164). Among the famous Napa Valley Cabernets, those from the Rutherford have an especially passionate following. The key is in the soil; the area was a riverbed at one point and infuses the fruit with a spicy element those in the know call "Rutherford Dust." After all that tasting, head to the gorgeous Rancho Caymus Inn for some R&R.

Things to do in Rutherford

Frog's Leap Winery

This winery's official motto is "Time's fun when you're having flies!" But don't let that fool you; their wines are luscious. The property is farm-like, complete with barn, chicken coop, and fruit and vegetable gardens. Frog's Leap is committed to sustainable principles, which guests certainly appreciate as much as the relaxed atmosphere, accommodating staff, and beautiful porch views.

Grgich Hills Estate

This company's President and Vintners Hall of Fame inductee has, over 50 years, earned several California state and international accolades, thereby establishing Grgich Hills Estate as one of the best wineries in the world. His award-winning 1973 Chardonnay has been featured in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, as well as the Smithsonian Magazine's "101 Objects That Made America." Simply put, what this means for you is perfection in every glass.
