No discussion of Northern California would be complete without mentioning the legendary Napa Valley, the heart and soul of America's fine wines. And although the spectacular wines steal the show, the area is also known for its exquisite cuisine, golf, spas, and more. If you haven't yet had the chance to visit, you should definitely be making some travel plans. You can find more information about this amazing region here.

Now, it goes without saying that the San Francisco, Sacramento, and Fresno areas should be on your itinerary. But Northern California has loads of other attractions that should be on your must-see list, as well. And we must say we'd love to run through all 48 counties, but we'll refrain; remember how we like simplicity?

Yosemite National Park

This unparalleled park has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and surely deserves the distinction. Famous for its impressive waterfalls and towering granite cliffs, the park's beauty spans an area roughly the size of Rhode Island. Whether you are looking for a quiet stroll to admire the scenery, or an extreme rock climbing or mountain biking adventure, Yosemite has something for everyone. A visit here is most definitely a bucket-list trip.

Redwood National Park

Yet another World Heritage Site, this park is home to nearly half of the tallest trees on Earth- the Redwoods. Standing amongst these giants is an experience to be treasured. Although the park's centerpiece is its Redwoods, it's also home to prairies, rivers, oak forests, almost 40 miles of pristine coastline, and herds of Roosevelt Elk (some right on the beach!)

Lake Tahoe

Bordering California and Nevada, this gem is famous for its cold, clear, deep blue waters which reflect the forested mountain peaks that surround the lake. Powdery and deep snow make winter skiing and snowboarding favorites, while warmer months see people hitting the lake in kayaks, canoes, jet skis, or throwing on their backpacks and hitting the nearby hiking trails.

Muir Woods National Monument

Home to over 550 acres of old growth Coast Redwoods in the San Francisco Bay Area, Muir Woods is an ideal place to hike and many trails are paved or boardwalked in order to  protect the trees' delicate roots. The forest is home to a wide array of plants and animals, but the stars are the giant Redwoods, some of which you can walk right through!

Lassen Volcanic Area

Boiling pools of acidic water, bubbling mud pots, and shooting steam are just some of the things you'll find at this fascinating park. But don't worry; it's all perfectly safe to get close to as long as you stay in the well-marked areas. The park's most noteworthy spot is Lassen Peak, a volcano that last erupted in 1914. There are also beautiful lakes and forests to explore, as well.
